My first castle! Well, sort of. Urm... at least I tried.

Post by NinthCircle »

This is my first attempt at a model of my own. I hate the acronym MOC so I avoid using it, but I'm sure that I'll eventually cave in and start slinging truncated phrases with the best of 'em.

This is my first stab at a viking fort/tower. It's a sketch, if you will. I intend to make a much larger version that's 4-5 stories tall when I get the pieces; that will be more like a drawing. And someday it may turn into a painting. In the meantime I present this pic.

Bigger pics can be found at this small gallery here.

With more pics (hopefully with better photography) and a real gallery to come.

Peace y'all,

From what I can see, this is a very nice Not-MOC. It looks very rugged and imposing, and I like the doors. I'm not a fan of some of the shields being low enough for the enemies to reach them, but other than that, it's great. I look forward to seeing the 'drawing', and hopefully, the 'painting'.

Edit: Is there something wrong with your camera's date system? 'Cause it says these pics were taken on January First, 2003.

Like smcginnis, I'm not a fan of the lower shields, but otherwise I like this outpost "drawing". I see it as one of a series of armed outposts demarking the territory of some grand chieftain. You've done a nice job of giving it a kind of mythic Norse mystique. Well done.

Its not half bad, I like it. I, too, am not a fan of the big viking shields but they work on this. I understand the "sketch" aspect of this or I would want there to be an interior. But not all creations need interiors, in fact I have a rather large MOC underway right now that will probably not have an interior, since it is being built for a public display. Anyway, great first creation and I look forward to many more!

I can say that I really like your first tower/fort...
I like how you went a lil'bit from usual vertical tower concept and that's what is making a little fort of this.
That lower shields wouldn't bother me, I probably wouldn't notice that, but now when the others have already mentioned it, when I better think... They do :P ... And I think you should switch the fig, some soldier perhapss, not the lord on the escort, please ...

Overall, nice first MOC Circle #9 :D

It looks like a very defensible position. It's true to the viking line, using all the best elements. Logs, shields, and plenty of spikes. Nicely done and I'm looking forward to the bigger versions.

I didn't notice the lower shields at first either! But I'd say yea, they could probally come off if you wanted to make a change or play around with the look a little - I do like the shields on the doors, so I'd suggest keeping them.

This is a nice looking little tower/fort. Looks very solid, and like footsteps, I can easily see it nestled in some nordic forest or on a mountain or what-not to demark territory.

Job well done~

Hey, NinthCircle!

Wow! Nice MOC! I really like the little details, like the spikes and the round grey studs sticking up. The design is cool, too, I really like that it's mostly wooden, not like most other castle MOCs out there. I'm fine with the shields, there, I might not be but for the horns sticking out from behind; it reminds me of a trophy deer's head mounted on a wall.

My major call for improvement is more foliage, this outpost seems to me like it would be in a forest of some sort, not an open plain.

Looking forward to more great MOCs from you in the future.

Meh, not bad. Just take the horns out of it.

Nice fort. It is very easy to imagine it sitting out in the middle of nowhere, holding a pack of barbarians at bay.

Wow! Thanks for all the kind praise and criticism. I just built this a little bit a night over a a few nights for fun and I wound up liking how it looked even though it's just a vague glimmer of what I really want to construct (with interiors of course) :P . We'll see about getting the parts. Imma do my thing-thing you know. Make some moves. 'Know I'm saying?

About the main negative criticism. I just liked to use the radar shields as decorations. I never even thought about attackers using them. I just wanted something sculpturesque on the base exterior. Point well taken.

I was most proud of the door. I was least pleased with lack of foilage. But that's because I don't have any! Since I was just playing around I figured the landscaping could wait until I felt comfortable with the model I was trying to build (and I can get my hands on some of those great pieces I see everyone else using).

I really just wanted to post something, even if it's not the best I could do, because I feel like a schlep when I come here and marvel at all the great creations. I felt like I should try to contribute something, anything. I didn't think anyone would really look at it, much less comment. But I recieved such encouraging criticism (taking into mind that I'm just starting out). What a great way to be welcomed into the community. And I was pleasantly surprised that everyone got my unspoken idea of towers defending and demarcating territory.

Thanks so much! :D

Hey, looks like I jumped on this train a bit too late...

Anyways, I do like this, its a neat little fort. I think perhaps the large sheilds could go on the inside when you get to that. The inside should be mroe decorated and the outside should be largly fortification IMO.

But overal a super first MOC here, my favorite detail is the green wedges (ground/grass) sloping into the door. It gives it a bit of "used" quality like there is a worn path leading to the doors.

I will look forward to more from you!
