I have been known to paint, and I've used decals, and I cut up a couple of things. I also use fimo/sculpey...
But right now I value LEGO elements. I think that mostly, official elements do the job and promote more creativity. And also it gives me a sporting chance of making figs and such.
That's not to say I don't own Little Armoury weapons, or that I didn't just place a $40 order from Redbean/Armothe.

I'm a pretty strict purist, I like the way LEGO does (or did ) things. I myself would never alter a LEGO piece, but I do enjoy looking at the work of some of the custoizers on here. However, to me if it's customized it's not LEGO.
The only parts I've modified have been cutting up some of the thin Technic tubing (not the ribbed kind) for use in Bionicle MOCs for added flexibility or connections in odd places, and some for a Castle vignette I'm working on, but nothing beyond that.
... Since Technic tubing doesn't really count, does it?

Does anyone see the irony in the large amount of 'Purists' perusing the 'Customs' boards?
I'm what you might call "anti-purist." Meaning not only am I not a purist, but I don't even understand the purist mindset. The only parts I will not shred just for the fun of it are the truly rare parts, as I don't like the idea of taking any more of them than necessary "out of circulation." But then, I don't think I even know of any parts that are -that- rare. Expensive, maybe. But not rare. Hard for a piece to be rare when, at the very least, there's 2 million of them in circulation.
I'll shred, glue, pin, paint, cut, tear, and otherwise mutilate and rebuild like a mad scientist, anything that I feel would be beneficial to me or the idea I'm trying to get down in plastic.
Oddly, besides putting waterslides on decals, I haven't modified -that- many true LEGO elements. Most of my modifications are done to Little Armory and BrickForge/MCN-Store/Redbean items.

As to myself: from the standpoint of the question, I have found the store clone brands disappointing for the most part and do not mix them with my Lego, but it's a case of lack of quality rather than any sense of purity. I enthusiastically use and recommend the great products of the Little Armory and Red Bean.
As to customs - well, this whole message line has nothing to do with customs but as long as we are here: I'm happy to customize any part just for the fun of it. No one predefines my creativity!

Now that that's off my chest, let me say that after a few bad experiences, I'll never buy another non-lego part or set again. They're just not up to snuff. I do, however, like custom made pieces, especially weapons & armor & headgear, stuff for figs. I'd like to try customizing some heraldry and banners someday, things like that. I think that's great for employing your non-castle figures in a castley way.
For most things, though, I think it's better to try and make something out of genuine lego parts. It's more creative that way. But, if it looks good, who cares?
I didn't vote on this one. I'm really in the middle. I don't customize perfectly good pieces, mostly because I don't have the budget to buy a lot of LEGO, and I lack the experience and skill to make really cool customs. I also don't use Bricklink, so I can't replace individual pieces.
However, I have made custom pieces out of FIMO and Sculpey, and I do make non-permanent decals, and I have used the sprues of small pieces as parts of customized pieces. I also think things like Little Armoury and Red Bean Studio are awesome, I would buy from them before clone brands any day. I think the difference between clone brands and small businesses like that is the fact that clone brands are just out to make money, and the private businesses create their pieces with the quality of LEGO, because they build LEGO themselves. Which is awesome.

I believe that no off-brand Lego makes a better world. Lego just has a better piece durability. Megablocks uses very crappy plastic. Whenever I see a non-Lego brand, I just look the other way...Although, the armor in the Megablocks dragon sets are kinda cool...IF THEY FIT ON A FREAKIN LEGO FIG!
If the Megabloks castle equipment fit on Lego figs, I'd get one but what do I do with the other pieces I don't need? Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished.
By the way, what does that mean?

Well, if that is the case, my vote is still right where I want it to be, there a handfull of clone brands out there that I enjoy, Oxford is up there as my favorite for minifig accessories, sadly, I do not own any.
I also like some of the MegaBloks weapons as well. (Don't worry, I don't like anything else )
I am a non-purist only when it comes to minifig accessories, so in some ways this does belong here in the customs section. Taking a cool Oxford weapon and putting it with a Lego fig makes me a non-purist, but also a minifig customizer. No clone BRICKS enter my collection, but I do like a lot of the clone brand accessories. So, I am a purist when it comes to the bricks only. When I find a begablok brick in my collection I give it to my cat, Jager, to munch on. He likes eating Lego and is not so discriminating as I between Lego and clone brick.

No, but the use of them does "customize" a creation. And since MOC, in the normal sense, refers mainly to purist mixes of bricks, throwing in a Clonebrand accessory can be considered a customization of LEGO.
That said, I would agree that this isn't strictly a Customs topic, but I'm content to leave here, as place well enough. If one of the Admins wishes to override that, and move it to the other logical alternative (General), that's their prerogative to do so.
