6086, anyone who said 6090 should be put to death.
Why? Well, thats how the world is.
People have a tendency to take me seriously and I say once again;
Im joking, Im a joke.
The reason why I prefer 6086 is pretty simple; it harbors not only an enormous amount of minifigs(including the white black knight, a wolfpack member and two bardings) but also an unique, quasi realistic design. Its one of the few castles with something so civilian as a well! The ideas on the backside of the box is amusing too (including a village!).
When I was younger I thought 6090 was superior because it was bigger, but now I know its not that impressive, even though I never got it.
The mini problem may be that I got too many black knights right now...

I prefer the look of the 6086 Black Knight's Castle (or Dungeon Master's Castle) over the 6090 Royal Knight's Castle. I also like the variety of figs.
I can picture putting 4 6086's together into a formidable keep. Grouping 6090's would be much more open. I can picture 6090 for a great keep by the sea where sun and air are preferred ... almost elven. Definitely more a fantasy keep.
Those are my thoughts.
6090 was my favourate castle for a long time. It is a huge and majestic castle and has some really neat architectural assets. But I will have to go with 6086 since I find 6090 a little airy. 6086 is more closely knit and I just love the Tudor walls and the red sloping roofs that go with the black walls. 6086, in my opinion, is the most realistic looking lego castle.
How do you defend a large castle with ,like, 5 guys!
I think that Royal knights castle 6090 is more of a stage set like King Leos castle and not as much a in the round castle as 6086 Black Knight's Castle and the current Kings castle siege.
I agree it is disappointing making a large castle set only to include a limited number of minigs, I like a minimum of 12 per large castle.
Ah, you have to love these old threads. Sadly, the Dungeon Master's castle is the only classic castle I never owned. Black Monarch's castle would take them all.
I like the 6090 castle a lot too. Both have nostalgia for me. The Dungeon Master's castle is extremely cramped. You wouldn't have to aim arrows to hit your targets there!
The term "Hobby" allows you to explain to your relatives why you still play with toys...
WHen i first got 6090 I was incredibly dissapointed. The gatehouse had no depth, the corner tower seemed half hearted, and the king's tower needed about twenty or so more bricks.
But compair it to much of the newer stuff and man it looks good.
That being said, brick for brick, 6086 is far superior. The design quality is astounding. Look at how much was done with a fairly modest, by modern standards, number of bricks. You had a great looking gatehouse, fantastic corner towers, the little plate built door, a well, and a 'great hall' with postern. You also had the nice high walls, and the unique construction techniques using the inverse slope bricks. I would dearly love to see a design of this quality with the modern count of 1000 bricks!
Another issue with 6090 was well, no euro armor!!!
Hello, I'm not sure if it's the right thread.
I'm looking for 6086 black knights castle alternate model pictured on the back.
Someone posted link once, but i can't find pictures.

Jojo has pictures of many of the box backs on brickshelf:
I will say 6090, but it is entirely down to personal taste really. I just like it more, for no real reason in particular. Maybe it's just because 6090 is a set I grew up with and liked, whereas 6086 is just some big set I've seen on a couple of websites in the last few years. I understand that most people prefer 6086.
Well I just laid my hands on a copy of 6086. So now I have 6090 and 6086, and I can compare them both. Although I like 6090 very much, 6086 appeals even more to my.
A has a nice sortment of minifigs (12!), 4 horses and a lot of weapons, flags and not forget the big yellow flag!
Playability is great, only the back of 6086 could have made better. I also like the yellow parts a lot!
Well, I was born in '88, so I came into Lego just before RK were introduced. One thing to point out is that some people just prefer other factions, which makes fig # comparison not as big a deal. I personally would rather get 9 RK figs and a barding than 12 BK figs and two bardings because well, I don't really like BK. Don't kill me. Also, I prefer the non-dragon plumes much more.
Anyway, I had never seen 6086 until a couple of years ago, and I grew up always wanting the 6090; all my life, 6090 was the one castle set I wanted, hands down.
As far as realism, neither of them is realistic. Be honest. They both have realistic "ideas", however, and for what they have in the box, I would now have to admit 6086 is better by design, even though I'd rather avoid the low walls in the back on both of them. However, I know that these sets are limited by pieces that TLC decides will go into a set. I think as a standalone set, 6086 is better, but given that most builders have a collection to base these around, 6090 could be built up into something really nice.
This topic has floated around for some time in various threads, so I *cough cough* hope I haven't actually replied to this one before...
Anyway.
Both of these Castles were long-held dreams for me to own. I was born in 1987, so I was just old enough to know and dream about 6086, but not quite old enough to get it. Instead, I got a discounted 6081 King's Mountain Fortress, which consequently has a higher nostalgic value for me than it probably deserves.
When 6090 came out a few years later, I HAD to have it. I loved the whole theme, and while some people dislike the king... I adored him. The shiny sword, shiny crown, bright heraldry was perfect from my point of view.
So, in April 1996, after a long, long, long saving up, I bought it.
A decade later, in May 2006, I finally realised my desire of having 6086, and got it off Bricklink.
Of the two... I think 6090 has the better design. In terms of aesthetic value, I realise this is highly personal, so I won't go into it. I really like a couple angles of 6090, but 6086, while attractive, sits too compact to have an impressive angle to it.
In terms of play, 6090 wins hands-down simply because it's more open and easy to get your hands into. Because of the smaller baseplate, this simply doesn't work as well with 6086, though it's not bad.
Also in terms of play, I am partial to 6090 simply for having more rooms and a more interesting base, with the lowest area with the well, the dungeon beside it (albeit oddly under the entry ramp from the King's tower), as well as the central courtyard by the portculis.
Fig-wise, once you fact in the ghosts and skeletons, the difference between the two sets isn't huge... but here 6086 definitely has the competitive edge, since it comes with a Wolfpack. Now, one little Wolfpack isn't much of an enemy for a twelve-man army, even allied with the ghost, but he's a bit more solid than that skeleton lurking under the stairs in 6090.
Still, despite layers upon layers of dusty, cobwebbed nostalgia for both sets, I would pick 6090 as my preference. This year. Bear in mind I've gone both ways over the years many times.
