Pearl Ex Pigments

Post by Lamanda2 »

-Cross posted with MCN-

Hello fellow Castlers!

Just dropping by to inform you of a new(Kinda) thing I've been playing with. It's this stuff called 'Pearl Ex Pigments'.
They are metallic pigments that my mom actually had around for some of her crafting. We got it at the craft store, it wasn't cheap, we got it a while back so it's hard to remember but it's probably along the lines of 4-8$ per color. (Probably all you will ever need)

I tested out the colors on some Euro Armor:
Image
The result in my opinion is just fantastic!
We have all the colors, (I think) so I tried them all out:
Silver
Gold
Blue
Green 1
Green 2

There is also another gold color that is lighter, but I need to spray that armor with some clear acrylic first.
All you need to do with this stuff is take a little clump of it on a small paintbrush (It helps to work over the bottle so you don't make a shiny mess.) and brush it all over your piece. Then blow off the excess and spray the piece with a light coat of an acryllic spray (Or whatever it is that you use.)
Just be careful not to touch it when powder-y, because naturally it will come off.

Have any question? then shoot.
Enjoy,

~Amanda

This is awesome looking stuff Amanda! I especially like that blue, it makes blued armor.I can see a lot of really cool bad guys sporting this.

What is the durability of the powder after having the clear cote sprayed on?

Looking snazzy, Amanda. Would it be possible to get some shots of the armor on minifigs? Also, are those black or dkgrey armors you've used? Unless I'm mistaken it looks like some of the base armor color shows through the pigments, meaning this might not work so well on the jellybean armor– right?

Another great innovation from a great customizer. I really like the colours on that armour: the silver would be good for a knight, and the gold for a prestigious knight at a tournament. Great job!

Emily- So far I've had no problems with the powder coming off. I have a suit of armor I messed up by touching before it dried, so maybe I'll scratch it to test how well it sticks on.

Morgan- I'll be sure to take some shots of the armor on figs. Yes, the base color will show through, so using the jellybean probably wouldn't produce as nice a result.
I used black armor, but I am sure grey armor would work fine.

Spongey- Thank you. I'll hopefully have more pictures by later today, and will get a few shots of the lighter gold armor.

Leaf- Thanks. I think the silver one is my favorite, I like the look of it better than the silver speckled armor Lego puts out.

I have to ask: does the paint stuff or whatever it is transfer to the minifig. I've had it happen with helmets before to minifigs, and suddenly they have a steel head.

Does this do that as well?

Nope, the powder should not wear off onto your minifigs once you coat it properly with acryllic spray.
(And let it dry for the ammount of time it tells on the can.)

These are really great looking! I think my favorites are the blue and the second green; the more realistic colors, while very nice, are quite similar to other things I've seen, and the first green looks a bit odd—although, it sort of looks like a corroded copper patina. As always, hope to see more soon!

These are really cool Amanda!!! 8) I really like the 2nd Green one alot as well. I'm really gonna have to try this stuff, or at least the rub'n'buff stuff since I imagine what you used would be harder to find. My only concern is that they would look out of place with the rest of the figs, in which case I might want to do them all  Oh well, can't wait to see pics of the figs.

Amanda,

Can you try some of the blue on the light blue armor? Think that could look quite cool. Also the green on the green armor would also look pretty cool and you could make Sir Gwain and the Green Knight, with an actual GREEN KNIGHT. Great work, can you let us know where to find this stuff, what store?

Magnificent work! :D The traditional colored armors will work well for wealthy knights, and the colored armors would work well for anyone doing Arthurian MOCs. The green armor could also be used for a Forestmen's champion or kinght.

God speed

Smcginnis- Thanks. You know, that first green does look like old copper. Then again, this is still shiny. :)

Quickblade- I'll try and get some minifig pictures soon. Wanted to get them last night, but the battery on our camera died.

Kam- Sure, that is if I can find a suit of blue armor (I know I have one somewhere..)
As for where I got it, just at a craft store we go to, 'AC Moore'

Emp.Justinian- I was thinking of making something like a Forestmen's champion with that green armor, I'll probably put one together one of these days.

Last night I tested how durable the armor is to wear. I took a new toothpick and scratched very hard across the whole piece and it didn't make a scratch.
It took a tac to scratch through it. I would say that means it's good and sturdy.

I looked for these in the Michael's and couldn't find it. I checked where all of the other metallics were like rub 'n buff, etc. Is this where they are most commonly found?
