Lego gold coin conversion!

Post by Aidan »

As I ponder my hoard of gold it occurs to me what it would actually be worth as a real hoard in todays dollars.

I judged that a gold coin is roughly the size of a minifig's fist. A "London Good Delivery Bar" of gold weighs about 27lbs and is roughly the size of 4 or 5 fists. That means that each coin would weigh about 6 lbs.

Today's closing price per ounce was about $417. So that means a minifig gold coin is worth about $40,000. That should buy a lot of loaves of Lego bread!

So a complete 4 coin assembly would be worth $160,000. Assuming the plastice piece is the middle is worthless  .

Any thougts?

Somebody has waaaaaaaaaaaay too much time on the hands! :D

But ignoring that particular thought:

Gold was worth a lot. Gold coins were very rare in the middle ages. Ridiculously oversized coins were virtually non-existent but would be worth quite a bit (a one ounce coin is big - with a six pound coin you'd walk with a limp).

I always use the middle piece as an "ingot", so that's worth more than a coin.

Its more a question of things you can ponder when at work away from your Lego

And in the case of the "ingot", if your going to use that, I would say its about 15lbs or say $100,000 even :D

I have always wished it was real, I have hundreds and hundreds of coins. I've always thought how great it woul be if it was real and human scale. I'd never bothered with the math, but now that someone has I may never look at my stock of gold the same way. My collection used to be much bigger, but my son took almost half for his treasure, but I still have quite a bit. I'll take some pics once I build structure to hold it. Henry will likely visit there soon. Work has been pretty hectic lately, but I am slowly organizing my collection this weekend. Thanks for the dreams about lego gold being real, that idea will plague me for days.

Now if that is true...

Then I have $1,800,000 in lego gold! Not bad, considering...

Well the hoard in the picture is worth about $91.5 million in coins, ingots, and bars  . I haven't yet figured out the weight of the swords, helmets, plates, crowns etc.

The folder is not public yet, but I retook the photo in better light.

Now to calculate the value of all the gems.......

That looks great Aiden,

Between the two of us we could finance a small country, excluding ingots, gold plates, crowns, helmets, I estimate that I have about $148,000,000 worth of coins. I only have about 125 ingots left as my son has taken about 200 ingots from me, along with about 500 coins, so he is pretty rich in his own right. Between my son and daugter I'd estimate our Lego gold worth over $200 million. Who knows what 1650 assorted jewels would be worth? If only real life reflected lego riches. :D

But each of the coins have a different number on them, so they must be worth different amounts.

Good point, but if we assume the coins are gold then there value is as a raw material unless the face value would indicate they are worth more then then they are as gold. For instance, a quarter has some value melted down, but because the face value ($0.25) is more we use the higher $0.25 as the value.

However, I will glady trade you a 40 denomination coin for only three 10 denomination coins if you would like. In fact I will trade you hundreds of 40's at that rate.

Aaaha! I thought such discussions might prompt evil thoughts  While the hoard was dragged up into the light for showing, it is once again safe and sound deep underground under a castle as yet unphotographed and undiscussed on this or any forum. :P

If worse comes to worse I may have to join forces with Will for proper defense.

It seems I made those dwarves with pickaxes just in time.

Oh no you don't! My fast moving cavalry armies like the Hsiung-Nu and Khazaks will get to the treasure before your tunnels reach the treasure chamber!

I am slightly better protected than Aiden. I doubt any silly men on horses or dwarves would be able to breach my defenses. I have my own dwarves for tunnel defense, 40 strong. I have 125 Armored Knights on horse, 250 Archers and 250 foot just for my royal knight army. If I brought in other factions from my own collection, I could add another 125 horse, 300 archers and another 350 foot. Then there are the centaurs, undead, goblins, trolls and other assorted baddies I could have join in. All told I could have about 1800 assorted defenders to protect my gold cache. My wizards, witches and warlocks are a strong defense as well, they enjoy throwing great gouts of flame with little or no provocation. I have seen a lot of armies and I doubt many would have chance gaining the inside of my keep to get to the gold stash. There are a few surprises inside as well, beware the walls for they breathe and eat...

Good luck to you Aiden... Godspeed. Magical and tactical defenses should keep you safe until levies can arrive from the north.
