My first MOC in 15 years...

Post by Odysseus »

I joined CC at some point this summer after seeing the new Castle sets at TRU. I have collected most of the new sets and have really enjoyed getting back into Lego. Yesterday I made my first BrickLink purchase, and I can see that it will be addictive! Fortunately the BrickLink store owner lives about 5 minutes away so I was able to pick up my pieces late this afternoon. $23.39 later, we have my first MOC since I was a teenager. I just made it up as I went along, so it is not based on anything or inspired by anything. It is a gate with temporary wooden fortification and some arched guard areas on the back.

I will probably take this apart after posting this to see what else I can make with the few pieces I have. I don't love this one, but I was too excited to put something together to really think it through.

Nice solid little gate! It looks like you've put a fair amount of thought and consideration into the different modules of the gate, and you coordinated the gray/bley quite well in the stonework. Looks very sturdy/solid.

2 quick questions, why did you make the little hole in the floor above the entrance? To drop things down on intruders?

Also, is there a gate/door?

Anyway, nice little creation there~

Good start I think. I like the way in which you combined dark and light gray bricks.

I see in this MOC (and also in a lot of others) the tecnique of using plates pieces for building the roofs.

How do you do it in a good way? I haven't understand yet...

Thank you for the replies! I have taken this apart already to play around. I have learned that I definitely need more pieces if I want to make anything substantial. But I have had fun experimenting, and there is plenty of inspiration on this site!

ottoatm,
Yes, the hole is for dropping things, and no, I don’t have any doors yet. You would think I would have thought of that when placing my order, but I did not! So for now I will need to make things sans doors.

albero78,
I simply lack the pieces to make any other type of roof (no slopes). And I kind of cheated with the roof on the timber fortification—it is just resting there at an angle.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Heh heh heh... no worries - I often find that the more I build, the more pieces I discover I need... it's a vicious cycle. :)

You could also have used a portcullis.

Glad you are enjoying the bricks!

It is a solid looking structure - nice to see another who has found his way out of the dark ages.

My favourite element is your roof design.

Thanks! Which roof? The one on the wooden fortification?

Hi Jonathan,

15 years is a substantial dark age. This is a good way to come out of it.
Just don't expect that you will ever feel satisfied with the number of pieces you have...

I also like the combination of the dark grey with the light gray. It is this kind of building details that will make your creation stand out.

Don't worry about the roof being loose. Personally, I am not above using a few tiny pieces of double sided sticky tape to fix things like that.

Keep on building!
best regards,
Stefan
