Do I have to break it?

Post by CyberLizard »

I would really like to do a large-ish castle MOC. My dilemma stems from the fact that I've got a lot of castle parts from my wife's old Black Monarch's Castle (6085), which we rebuilt and have on the shelf. (Funny note, I was able to recreate a lot of it without the instructions by following the dust outlines on the pieces  ) Anyway, I've thought about modifying it and enhancing it, but I'm loathe to destroy such a classic. After some reading here, I see that I'm not the only one who loves this set.

Any thoughts? Am I being too sentimental? I know I can always build it again, but I like the fact that it's built with almost all original pieces.

p.s. This is my problem with almost everything I build, set or MOC: I feel like such a cannibal when I tear pieces off an existing model. *sigh* I guess that's why I spend so much money on new sets and BrickLink

An understandable dilema.

If it has most of the original pieces to it, I think if it were me, then I would keep it together, and just buy some extra bricks to have fun and build with.

..But it's really up to you, there shouldn't be harm in using it to build new stuff. You can always find the pieces again, or get replacements when you want to re-build.

I ahve the same problems all the time  If I were you I would take it down and try to build some MOC's. If none of them come out to well, then just take them apart and build the black monarch again. :D

Shred it. >=)

You CAN always rebuild.

Original pieces original shmieces, if they're covered in dust they need to be disassembled and cleaned anyway. Sounds like a good excuse to MOC.

As if one even needs an excuse. ;)

Normally I would say, if you are "playing" with the set, leave it be. But there is nothing normal about me these days :P The good news is, that you can buy more pieces easily, and the instructions aren't that hard to come by. The bad news is, once you build a MOC that you fall in love with, you'll get even more sentimental about that MOC and be loathe to tear it apart with no hopes of recreating it exact. LORD DOOM and I are 2 sides of the same coin on this one

Here's what works for me. Slowly take it apart over the days and weeks, taking only the pieces you need from it, until it looks like a total disaster, and you don't want it any more, then CAPLUSH! She's gone.

But really, I'd keep it, but I guess that's (because) I don't own one anyway :?

I have taken BM castle apart once since I have owned it.... That said some of the others come apart alot more often than it does. It just looks so good gazing across the display over at king's castle, eternal enemies waiting for the right time.... oh sorry.

The two ways you have to go that I see are- take it apart or get some new pieces from Ebay, Bricklink or Lego direct. The choice to pillage the castle for pieces.... a very ancient practice I might add.

i say take it apart. There is no harm in doing that. Just give it a try. Try to make the castle look even better (or build a new moc). If it doesnt work out, just rebuild the 6085.

Also you can always keep 6085 for a while, and when you have looked at it often enough it might be easier to take it apart?

I'm always happy with all the extra pieces you get when taking apart a moc. For example i cant wait to rip apart Cafe Corner and Green Grocer for all those lovely pieces....
You want a piece of me?!?!

When I find myself in times of trouble, mother Mary comes to me, speaking words of wisdom; let it be.

Seriously though, tear it down.

It depends on how much I am impressed with the moc i build on whether I tear it down or not. Most of them float around for a few days then i tear em up and build off it. Mostly I brainstorm on it then will build something bigger or more detailed out of it. Depending on how much I like it, or how much better I think it is, or how many more ideas I think I can put into it is what determines its intactness.
