The Guild Hall of Dortmund

Hello!


This MOC I built for the ISCC (International System Creativity Contest on 1000steine.de) which was announced for spring 2009 (!). This contest never took place, so for almost a year the MOC gathered dust and I even forgot the story coming along with it. Anyway, finally I managed to publish it.

It is the old Guild Hall of Dortmund (which happens to be my hometown), built sometime before the year 1250, and until 1955 it was the oldest city hall in Germany that was completely built of stone. Then its ruins were tore down after the building had suffered severe damage in World War 2. In my version Borrhos, the red wizard, took over power of the city. As can be seen by clicking the picture:



A MOC within the MOC is the travelling hawker. In Dortmund many grocery stores are run by Turks, so it felt fitting to have one in this MOC, too:

It has been too long since you've posted a castle moc Jojo, good to see a new one
The build is great, as usual. The decorations on the building look great, there are some nice techniques used there. I really like the interiors.

It's a bit empty though. Maybe some more figs, and a tree or so?

it's always nice to see another one of your MOCs. More than any other castle builder, you really have an ability for understated detail. I love the fact that you use 1x1 plates for floor tiles even when it isn't necessary or that you used 1x6 plates for floorboards even though larger brown plates would have done the trick. Every detail is so well-thought-out. It's a level of detail that is rarely seen in MOCs this large. It's also nice to see a MOC where everything isn't tiled over. Great stuff!

Quick question; perhaps it's the lighting but is the furniture in this MOC reddish brown?

In my opinion it’s never wrong for surfaces where minifigs are meant to stay and walk on to be studded. That applies to floors, stairs, occasionally furniture. Also Lego’s trademark is having studs, so I don’t see why one would deny that.

Quick question; perhaps it's the lighting but is the furniture in this MOC reddish brown?

Since this is the residence of the red wizard I had toyed the idea of making it my gateway-MOC for using reddish brown elements. It wouldn’t have been too far off. Ultimately I turned that thought down and ended up placing one reddish brown barrel in the wizard’s chamber, which is hardly noticible. Not at all, really. I’m not sure if that counts as overcoming my ..erm.. fear of the new colours, I guess not.
So no, the furniture in this MOC is all pure brown. :-)

Great Moc JoJo! I really love all the details in the wizard's chamber and the floor mosaic in the "small hall'. I share your sentiment about the use of 'studs up' for floors. It adds a playabilty factor to MOCs that I think is important, and is definatly important to my 7-year-old, who always manages to get his hands on all my creations!
