Questions on armoring spartans

Post by timber_wolf899 »

Ok, we all agree that the spartans rock!
BUT they are unarmored, which is not historically accurate. A spartan needs a heavy breastplate.

My questions are this.
1. Do the spartan helmets work with the standard armor element?

2. if so, what is the best color match? I am considering standard issue pearl gold, or chromebricks copper.

Uhh... The breastplate is printed on the torso, and I think it represents the armor they had well. But if you wanted to put the armor piece on with the helmet it works fine.
As for the color... I don't know, it seems to be brighter than PearlDkGold so I guess it is PearlGold. And I don't know anything about custom pieces or color.

Hope that helps! :) I know Its tough trying to deal with colors and pieces that you don't own yet...
Light travels faster than sound, which is why some people may appear bright until they open their mouths.

Yeah due to the fact that the paint is painted on and not a part of the plastic the color will be lighter than a normal plastic pearl gold. However different armors would work really well as far as color goes but the torso itself is also a fine choice! The helmet does fit on most armors I tested.

Actually a heavy breastplate would completely inaccurate while the printed breastplate is OK as a representation of a bronze cuirass.

At the time of the Peloponnesian War I believe that the common soldier would have been wearing the classic linen armour called a linothorax.

Here's a quick and dirty snap with the pearl gold armour. The helmet fits perfectly. The colour isn't a perfect match, obviously, but looks acceptable to me (mind you, my colour vision's pretty terrible):

I hope that's some help.

As for 'accuracy'... This style of armour seems to me to be as good an approximation of a Greek 'bell' cuirass as could be achieved in Lego. This kind of metal armour was indeed out of fashion by the time of the Peloponnesian War, but then so was the 'Corinthian' style of helmet this figure is wearing. If you want Persian War-era Spartans though (and really, who wouldn't? :) ) then the armour and helmet combo works fine. The shield on the other hand is nothing like any Greek hoplite's aspis; that's inevitable up to a point given that it has to be held by a minfig (so the grip can't be right), but the face is all wrong too (flat with a central boss?). Brickforge's round shields provide a much better approximation.
