Weekly Set Review: Wizard's Cart

Post by architect »

Join the weekly Classic Castle set review discussion. Please post your opinions on the set play ability, piece selection, design, etc. Which sets stand up to our catapult of critique and which ones crumble in shame!

This week’s set is 1736/1746/2891 Wizard's Cart.

Wizard's Cart was released in 1995 for the Dragon Master's. Majisto pulls this cart which carries a treasure chest. The American version of this set, 1746, was a polybag while the European version, 1736, was boxed. In 1998 the set was rereleased in Japan through Kabaya and numbered 2891.

Hello!

Not much to do with this set. You get a Majisto (didn't have any Majistos before?), a treasure chest (if only I had as much of everything as I have treasure chests....) and a grey bird (a grey parrot?). And some useful cart wheels and other parts. However, as a starter Minifig set it's not bad.

Hmmm....what a set. Really nothing very unique here. If you need another wizard for your wizard legion, then maybe this is useful. The little wheels are useful. I don't have as many of those as the bigger ones. I have about as many grey birds as I have treasure chests, and I have a lot of treasure chests. The design is okay (can you really mess up a hand drawn cart?) so I give this a 5/10.

I use the wizard hats for Dragonian (black monarch/dragonmaster) nobles, and beards are very useful at any time. Im probably the one using wizard hats for any non-mage type character. Can I use it for any historical correctness at all, alchemists?

A chest is also nice to have, and a hawk (well, thats what it is right?)
Magic rods... they are pretty. A good torso for peasants and a smilie face. Good for society builders (opposite to army builder) if you have found a use for those hats.

I passed this up when it came out... and I probably would again... though the grey parrots are useful (to me) and the small wheels, as noted, are great.

God Bless,

Nathan (caught in the rare act of commenting on a set he doesn't own... not that I own a lot of sets... I just don't comment.)

I remember getting this set a long time ago. Sure it has another wizard, but when I got it, it was my first wizard so I was quite happy. And I'm still happy I picked up this set since I never got any of the large DM sets. 7/10

Actually...

No. I never did get a Majisto, and I still don't have one. But then, my small army of three Dragon Masters was accumulated without the aid of getting any sets. Got into the game at too young an age for that...

Meanwhile: this is a pretty much useless set. While I, with my wizardless status, could have used the set, I did not need a treasure chest, and don't really use grey birds. The wheels would be okay to get (I only have a precious few...). The design strikes me as quite poor, given that wizards really don't need to pull around carts of treasure.

Parts: 6/10
Playability: 4/10
Figs/Accessories: 7/10
Design (contemporary): 4/10
Design (universal): 3/10
Nostalgia: 4/10

Overall Score: 4.67/10 (F--one of the few sets I've graded for failure)

I am also a wizardless man. I like the blue hat, though, and I have two of them.... Anyway, back on topic, I think the most useful pieces here are the wheels, bird, and torso. 'Nuff said.

I have to confess, I was curious to see what the reviews for this set would be like... an army builder(for wizards?).

I have to admit, there is something about this set I like... maybe it's just because it reminds me of Gandalf for some strange, perhaps stupid reason.

So...

Although you could all make this set with spare pieces/figs... I have to say that I like it.

However, I cannot help but notice it doesn't really provide anything valuable, and most of us don't want a geriatric army blue-wizards.

I am usually a promoter of Dragon Master sets, but this one ain't a friend of mine.

The design of the set is okay I guess. I mean, how bad can a hand cart be?

For pieces that set has nothing that can't be gotton in a better set.

The whole point of the set has always escaped me. Why does Majisto bother pulling his treasure when he has guards and dragons to do it?

(sigh) Not a nice set.

Hmmm... you get a Merlin minifig... well I waned that set long time ago since I wanted a Merlin minifig and didn't had one but since now I do, this set really seems pointless. Same as sets like 6028/6029 or 1463/1695/2889 with different minifigs. Those sets are only good as cheap sets to get minfigs but since they rare to get so to pay a ridicules price for them is really useless.

This is one set we could have done without. If you wanted the Merlin/Majisto fig but couldn't afford the larger sets, you could always have bought that Majisto's Magic Shop set and gotten more useful parts (tree foliage, scroll, etc).

This was not needed.

2 of 10.

Cheap way to get a wizard - if you are a jaded member of Classic-Castle, you might not value that since Wizards accumulate over time. But for an inexpensive stocking stuffer (and I stuffed stockings with similiar stuff), it was alright. 7/10.

I have 7 or 8 of these sets. Got them for a couple of dollars each. The hats are in my "junk" bag along with HP tossled hair and Sam Sinisters top hats

The torso is the reedeming feature. Peasant fig, as others have mentioned, is my use for this. Wheels for carts/wagons, birds for the trees and treasure chests for the Wolfpack to steal :D

This is the set to get if you want a(nother) wizard. Otherwise, there's not much to it, but what can be expected from a set of this size?
