Do you ever think your getting too old for LEGO?

Post by Graynar »

Hey guys,

Have you ever been told by parents or friends that your getting too old for LEGO? Or is it only natural for people who haven't had much experience with LEGO to say things like this.

Do you ever think your getting too old for LEGO? Or is LEGO a mature toy you still love?

Personally, I get told I'm too old for LEGO a lot by my parents. But that might just be me.

No, its not just you. :) I am 31 years old and most of the people I work with think I am nuts for still collecting Lego. But they get used to it. Most people have hobbies and most hobbies sound kind of crazy to the people who aren't involved. I wouldn't worry about it.

Take care,
Josh

PS. You know what comment really gets to me? "Someone obviously has too much time on their hands." The "too old for Lego" routine never bugs me, but that one does. Man....

Ha ha ha

Story of my life Marko - and it's probally one of the big thing that leads us all into a dark age or two... especially when the girls come into the picture - even now I was a bit nervous about showing my girlfriend my collection...

She reacted the best she could, and now has an account here at CC solely to monitor and PM when she thinks I need to reigned in. ;-)

So, to answer your question, it happens to me all the time - and I went into a long, LONG dark age because of it...

...but I regret it, I still have sooo much to catch up on these days, and I've been out of my DA for 4 years now! :?
Someone obviously has too much time on their hands."
I agree... this is very annoying... and I would say the same thing to someone who sits in a boat all day dangling dead fish over the edge... (although I do also enjoy fishing ;-))

Hey, if LEGO can be used by spacecraft designers as a visualization device at the Jet Propulsion Lab, then I can still have my LEGO. :D

Honestly, I don't view it as that different from model trains, a traditional adult hobby toy. Kids often go through a stage where they want to be accepted as beyond "kid-stuff", though, and parents don't always perceive of LEGO as an adult hobby.

Actually, I got that a lot more in my 14-17ish years than I have since discovering CC. I think CC has helped my parents (well, just Mom. My Dad actually went and bought himself a train, despite no childhood affiliation with LEGO) realise that this is a lifelong passion, and there's really no getting out of it.

Mom's also made the comment a few times that "at least it's just LEGO". Hmm... I wonder what else I could be obsessing over? :P

Not really... Its my hobby and everyone I know knows that about me. My lublimaya (Russian for sweetheart) thinks that it's "cute".

My parents are OK with it. I've managed to get my sister into it as well. My friends thinks its cool.

All.... the.... time....

I get a lot of comments like that, sometimes daily, between my real life and my online life. Owning a website like Ikros has really brought out some really nasty comments.

According to all the comments I get, not only am I too old for LEGO, but...

I've got too much time on my hands.

I am not married.

I've never had a girlfriend.

I am over thirty and still living in my mother's basement.

I've never seen the sun.

My ability to write is infantile.

My ability to tell a story is limited only to copying the Lord of the Rings.

And the cherry on my sundae...

I don't play with LEGO because I like it, but because I can attact young children into my house to molest them.

Yup... I've heard just about every one there is. But you know what shuts most of them up (the ones I talk to, anyway)? Showing them what I can do with LEGO. Its amazing how many people just see the word LEGO and assume all of the above things. It isn't until they actually SEE what can be done with the brick that they understand that this is no mere child's toy.

My parent's thought it was 'cute' until I built my first dragon. Now I never seem to amaze my parents. My wife not only accepts my hobby, but she participates! My non-LEGO college buddies razz me about it constantly, but its' never mean spirited, mainly because they really think it's pretty darn cool.

I tend to agree.

OMG.... that has got to be the most MESSED UP comment I've ever heard of regarding an AFOL!!! :x :x :x

Talk about ignorance.....

You seriously need to reply to those people and show them what the AFOL community is all about.

My parents have never had a problem with it (except that they tend to get angry about the mess in my room :P )

And my REAL friends accept it and even think it´s cool, but most people I know tend to think that it´s ridiculous though, but I don´t mind. Almost everyone in the town I live in think I´m a freak anyway...

Recently, when one of my friends came round to play Metal Gear Solid, and he spotted one my Royal Knights sitting on the top of the TV. He laughed his head off, and then remarked: "How lame is that?

I had tried to hide all my Lego earlier that day, BUT for some reason, one of those pesky guys escaped. I made up a story about my younger brother owning them, but my friend was still suspicious. He was acting as if he'd found 'adult material' in my drawer or something. :x

The fact that I still like Bionicle was a known fact around school. I only have a handful of friends now, and none of them care for Bionicle or Lego anymore.

Sometimes I wonder what's keeping me with my Lego these days. No-one else in my part of town likes it, and my own parents don't approve of it either. Oh yes, there's you guys on here, but it's a fact that you can't have your friends on a computer only, and besides, you know what people think when you say you've got 'friends' you met online. Especially if some of them are older than you

Who cares what other people think anyway - I'm in my fifties and I still collect Lego. People who know me accept it for what it is, my hobby.

One of the best ways to respond is to show them Robert Carney's castle site (among others).

I managed co convince everyone who thought that my Lego hobby is a bit odd that it actually isn't. I am studying physics and engineering, and I say that building with Lego improves my designing and modelling skills.

Hello!

Yeah, sometimes I feel too old.

Graynar wrote:Have you ever been told by parents or friends that your getting too old for LEGO?
My parents mentioned this point when I was about 16 and still wishing for LEGO for Christmas. (I got the 6286 Skull's Eye Shooner anyway...)

My friends accept my hobby and don't tell me I'm too old. Maybe they don't quite understand it, but at least they are my friends. They wouldn't be my friends if they would not accept me having LEGO for a hobby. But I'm 28. When I was 16 I didn't spread the word that I was still playing with LEGO :-)

It happens to me all the time.
Most of the time I ignore it. The rest.....Well, I beat the crud out of them(belive me, after making their hole body sore for a week usually cures...when it doesn't they get their friends to beat me and I beat the crud out of them all), but I wish I didn't had to do it.

Guess I got lucky then, my gals got me more into the hobby than ever, takes me out lego shopping all over searching for those 50-60% off sales. She even buys me Legos from time to time, and when I made her a custom minifig of her for her 21st b-day she thought it was the most adorable thing a guy could have done.

I'll never be too old for legos, sure I may one day stop collecting ( only the slightest chance) but even that doesnt mean I'm going to stop playing...errrr building with them.
well I would at least like to think that I'm evil...
