MOC of a Rembrandt by Barbara Werth

Post by Bruce N H »

Hey all,

The source material is a couple of centuries too late to be truly medieval, but everyone should definitely check out Babara Werth's recration of the Rembrandt painting "The Anatomy Lecture of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp":

The original Rembrandt for comparison:

Very cool, in a sort of grotesque way. It looks very much like the original. Those (scala?) foam pieces are very useful for frilly collars, and as always, fleshies make the perfect dead people.

Well crafted! I am most impressed by the head choice and the lighting she used. They both make the whole thing look very much like the original!

I didn't know TLC even made blank fleshie torsos. :shock: {shudders}

Anyway, I applaud any attempt to render flat art into LEGO, and this one is particularly well done.

I'm not 100% sure it is light flesh--it may be tan, as the head and torso look slightly different to me, but that may well be a trick of lighting. However, AFAIK there is no blank light flesh torso, but if you took any of these three torsos:

Poison Ivy, Patrick (Spongebob's friend), and Slave Leia, respectively, and turn the arms backwards, you'll have a blank fleshy torso. As long as no camera angle shows the back side.

I think I prefer the lego version to the original!

Hmmm. I like it. I'm a fan of the painting, too. They both look very similar, good job on the re-creation.

Now if only you could capture those pointy noses in Lego...

Hehe, I'm not sure I can say I prefer LEGO to Rembrandt, but I like them both equally. I never thought I'd be saying this, but that is an ingenious loincloth!

Wow. I didn't think Annie Preston's artistic vigs could be topped, but this is amazing. Great find, Bruce!

Interesting MOC. I think I'll borrow that design for some colonial era European minifigs.

Looks like there is another painting rendered in Lego:

This time its a Spitzweg:

I'll refer you to the eurobricks thread so you can see the original painting too...

I think the Anatomy Lecture was better, but there were a couple intersting bits in the Poor Poet - like the single leg in place of the boot.
