New arrow slit technique!!!

Post by wunztwice »

Hey all,

In the process of building my Castle McGloghlan I stumbled upon a new technique for building small cross-shaped arrowslits. The first couple of images in the BShelf folder are of how it was implemented in that castle. However, I soon realized that due to those specific parts I would be limeted in the places and numbers of them I could build.

So, I figured out another way. It's more parts-intensive, but works well for me. It also gave me an excuse to show off another little castle detail I've been wanting to implement, striped shutters.

And the whole gallery here!

I'm really, REALLY interested in what you all have to say.
I'd like your comments please! Thanks for looking.

I like it! I'm not overly fond of the shutters - I think it's more the zig zag pattern actually - but the SNOT on that particular version offers alot of other possibilities for detail. Well done :)

Cool! Thanks for discovering this. The arrow loop itself is very cool, but I don't really like the shutters either. I'll have to experiment with this...

I really like the first idea. The second one is good, but the striped shutters don't do it for me. Thanks for discovering this!

Well, I definately like the first one better. Mainly because I like the inverted slopes. However, both are cool.

I love both of them, but the first one is a bit better. It makes it look like The Cross.

Hi Chris -

This is really nifty! Was it inspired by Didier Enjary and his DSNOT? I agree with the others about the shutters - Stripes are one things, but striped in a warning pattern detracts from it.

Somehow I'm imagining a way to separate the hinge tops another plate, and slide panels up and down to cover the top and bottom gaps. I think it could be done, but it would be difficult to get rid of the vertical gaps too. The construction would probably be so difficult and large it might not be reasonable for a castle though.

Just a thought, it might not even make sense!

Very imaginative! Will this castle make its way over to the valley for BrickFest? Hm, HMM?

Thanks guys!

Yeah, the shutters didn't work out quite as well as I had hoped, but I still like them personally.
Below I have a reference shot (url) and some other possible tiles I could use to get a simelar effect.

Thanks, yeah the first one works very well and easily, but it's hard to work into some areas of a MOC, thus the second version...

That depends, how rainy is it (oh right...) Naw, just teasin'. That particualr castle is dismantled now, but I might be able to work it into the one I plan on bringing. :D

Thanks everyone for your kind comments!

As promised here's the link to one instance of my inspiration.

And, here are more examples of tiles-I-couln't-find-at-the-moment-but-could-use.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

LOVE the shutters

I have to disgaree with several people. The shutters totally rock! They give the MOC a real german feeling. Reminds me of Rothenburg ob der tauber and at least one Durer urban landscape I recall seeing.

Hey this is a good idea for arrow-slits. I am always up for new types of castle windows, and these look good. I am going to have a go at making some of these. Thanks for sharing your ideas.

By the way, I don't mind the shutters, I can see where you were going with the stripped tiles though. Good work.
