Stranger in a strange land...

Post by LEGOFREAK »

After the earth shattering cataclysm that struck the famed port city of Draelith, a lone scout come across a wide and fertile valley.
There appears to be no one around, no signs of human settlement.
A perfect place to rebuild....
He smiles happily and prepares for the journey to inform the baron and the tattered refugees of Draelith.

Man - I am going to need more baseplates! - and yes BenE. - I do plan on washing all of these plate. :D

In the coming months I will be adding links to this thread as the progress continues. I doubt at this point I will even keep the current layout of plates, already Alex and I are talking of a river running down the center of the tables.
Feel free to throw out any ideas, or what you would do if you had the space. I have never been able to build in this scale before and I must confess I am a bit daunted. Fortunately on this site I have seen so many wonderful and awe inspiring creations that it is a challenge I will happily face.

Nice! I am sure you can teach us all to 'Grok,' Mr. Smith. How about adding some trees? Eh? Eh? And where is your drawbridge? I don't see none o' dat there!

*laugh* What exactly is the long term plan for the site? Shall there be an entire saga ranging over the landscape you've planned?

Thanks Dave. Actually I am planning one large keep/tower (not on your scale though) with a small town around it. on the other side of the lake, a black tower will sit, there for my son to plot his nefarious deeds, like where to hide my car keys.

I have rearranged the plates and added the mountains, but am still working on them. Right now it is boring to look at, so I will wait 'til I have a bit more to show off.

However, here is my new faction for the new city. (and by the way - ThANKS ARMOTHE! that is an awesome flag - I had forgotten you made one of those! as you can see, it works great - though I did use it to make a wrap around flag instead of one with the holes..)

and a whole troop...

(ps - for some reason the flash on the camera makes these seem not as bright as they really are. it dulls the color a little bit. these are almost the exact shade of red as the bricks are.)

Very Grandiose, Freak. Can't wait to follow the progress!
I wonder - Do you have any cute Knights hanging around that place? And if so, does the cute one need a new Water Brother of the Castle Chick variety? ....Castle Jen is on the way! ;)

Ok Freak, I am inspired. Had a big siege with my kids on the weekend and now am planning on tearing apart my big castle (maybe the small one too) and building it different, on a raised landscape like you are doing. A drawbridge would then make more sense

For the ground inside your keep do you use 1/3 plates or the brick depth plates? I am going to have to wait a while until the local Superstore has a sale on Lego (I need more landscaping bricks) as they have 4 4107 tubs that I plan on taking off their hands. I look forward to seeing more of your progress.

Thanks for the comments Troy.
I use a mixture of both thick plates and thin. The pain was washing all the dusty surfaces (Just for Ben E) :D

Here is more of the progress by the way.

And On a sad note. the wizards tower in the last scene.. well apparently one of three things happened. Either a spell went horribly wrong, a demon got loose from the nether regions of heck, or my son destroyed it by accidentally falling onto it while walking across the table...

Guess which one it was?

freak :D

(oh well - i wanted to use the curved pieces to make a tower like Dave O's anyway....)

That sure is going to be an impressive display once completed! I like the way you are showing in progress pics and the figs working away. I also noticed some nice custom shields on some of the knights. :D

And whenever I see it I sure am going to say I wish I had more room to play with

Just curious LF, how old did you say you were? If you're under 20, with all that room and lego-I'd be dammed! Thats just awesome!

This is really starting to come together Freak. At first I wasn't sure what the plan was for all those baseplates etc... but now I like it. I am planning a project on a similiar scale to this one, it is great to watch progress shots so we can see the little construction details we may want to steal. :D

Thanks for all the comments!

I am really pleased with the stickers, and I like the way the overall town/keep/whatever is turning out. However I am stumped with a lack of gray. (A usual castle builders complaint.)

So this project is on hold for awhile, at least the main castle parts. I will be building some shops and homes to fill it in, and I am still adding foliage and such, while I wait to build up my gray.

Another problem is the fact that I have to constantly rebuild. I wasnt to sure why...

Ok here is some more pics, these of the main keep at New Draelith

http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=78267

(after moderation of course)

Now, a few notes on these pics. I am a lousy photographer, especially at 12:45 AM, the time I took these pics and posted this post. :D

That being said you will notice a few things. The interior is completely bare as I need to get a bunch of plates. The crenelations are a work in progress, and please vote here:
viewtopic.php?t=1112
for one of the styles you would like to see on all of them. And finally, in the backgrounds are a couple of items I'd like to point out. One is the Heart of Draelith which you can see in the to the left of the keep in the 'open' shot. Yes it's glass, and not Lego, but hey, I love it anyway. :D The other item of noteworthiness is in the left of the 'rightfront' shot. My son says no castle is complete without on of these, and I happen to like it in the courtyard there. Chewing up a horse no less.

yes, its a T-Rex.

ok - opionate away please :D
