Looking for Adm. Matthew's stickers (LOTR stickers in gen.)

Post by The Blue Knight »

I am looking to assemble some LOTR stickers. My first stop was to the "how to" section and I found an article from Matthew Taylor;

http://www.classic-castle.com/howto/art ... mmatt.html

The links from this nearly 3 year old page are broken. Come to think of it, I recall a "Adm. Matthew" (or something very close) being a frequent poster here, but no longer. I know I have dropped out for large chunks of time due to life in 2007, but has he stopped posting entirely? Perhaps I have missed his posts?

Surely there are other LOTR stickers out there. Where can I find them?

Richard

OK, I discovered the search feature (only took me 4 years) and found Mattew's posts. I'm still interested in other LOTR sticker designs.

I made some Gondolin designs for the Create a Theme Contest (that I never actually entered ;)) that might interest you. They need some tidying up here and there but I am reasonably pleased with them. Mostly based on The Book of Lost Tales.

Richard,

If you still have not found what you want I bet someone on here has them saved. I have a few floating around from him I think though the place I downloaded them is now a dead link as well.

I have been working on making some tolkien based lego sets and will do some modified stuff but to be honest I have not had good luck with making them into stickers yet. It may just be my somewhat cheap printer.

I thought someone sold them at times on ebay and here as well in sheet form.

Maedhros,

Love the Gondolin heraldry. Very nice attention to detail!

Wow!!! I cannot believe someone else read all the extra books outside the LotR and the Hobbit as well! For several years I was quite obsessed with Tolkien and have read and own almost every book in print of his. Did you ever get to read the sequal to LotR he started? Pretty good stuff though I see why he stopped writting, very sad and dark.

Thanks!

You mean that thriller about a cult of sorts in Gondor after the death of Aragorn? It did have potential.. maybe it's for someone else to pick up the loose end :P

I think Formendacil is THE Tolkien freak on these boards but lately I have caught up a bit. I am in a Tolkien Society here in Sweden. You can check the (English) site here >Link<. Some stuff on linguistics and the like that I am sure you will enjoy ;)

Yep thats the one. It totally would have been amazing but from the notes seems like Tolkien felt it was getting too dark. I can understand. I have dumped tons of projects I have worked on for reason or another, though not usually because they get too dark.

Thanks for the link will chack it out!

Well....

This is getting a little offtopic, but I think the other Mods will understand that I'm not the best person to do the actual cutting-off of a Tolkien-related discussion.

The "New Shadow", as I believe Tolkien referred to the would-be post-Lord of the Rings thriller, wasn't so much dumped, I think, because of the darkness in it (and from the opening part, as far as it went, it can certainly be said to have been there), as because Tolkien came to the realisation that there was pretty much no way you could do an encore act after the Fall of Sauron, which wasn't just the epic conclusion to a massive novel, but was the culmination of two Ages of Middle-Earth struggling against the prime servant of the primordial evil. Any human-inspired cult, though perhaps an interesting story, would simply have been unable to measure up.

That and Tolkien had a very regular habit of starting things and not finishing them...

Erm...

Yeah. To drag this topic a bit closer back to the original title, although I have dabbled regularly in Tolkien-related LEGO, I don't have any related sticker templates to speak of. When doing my Silmarillion figures project (long since left stagnant...), although I used a number of custom torsos and such, none really had any heraldry on them--except the swanwing shield I used for Tuor.

Formendacil ,

I am pretty sure Christopher Tolkien is the one who said his father felt it was getting a bit too dark in the small notes at the end. I think one notes also states somethign about what you mentioned that after Sauron how to you up that. I always figured that the head of the cult was some remaining henchman oof Sauron or something. That said it has been a few years since I read over that one.

Did you ever post any of the finished figs you did?

Well... *shrugs* Given how long it's been since I read that volume, it's entirely possible that such was also a reason, but my impression was that the chief reason was more to do with the impossibility of topping the Lord of the Rings. Of course, I could be wrong. In any case, it's not really pertinent on this forum to go any farther.

My Tolkien figs, as far as they went, are here:

The photography is rather atrocious for a number of figs, for which I apologise.

Formendacil,

Very cool. I made some valar and maiar as well many years ago. It was in my construction paper days so they were set up in robes etc, armour and all sorts of things. They did not have lego beards back then so Manwe had a fuzzy beard made from my Mothers sewing goods.

Really like Maglos and his harp! Very nice job on that. Nice to see so many of the characters done from the Silmarillian. Did you makre any bad guys? Noticed seems like all good folk.

I had made Hurin as well. Put him in a scale torso with red arms, blue legs... the standard lego face as that was what there was and a painted helmet that I tried adding a dragon to with some glue.

Happy days. Thanks for the pictures!

I consider myself fairly uo-to-speed on things Tolkien, but I haven't heard of this cult business at all. Very interesting. Maybe you could provide a link for me to explore?

I have dreamed of Middle-earth Lego, and I'm determined to get some started. I'll post some of what I've got later. But for now I want to lay hands on some more stickers. I am not at all skilled in making them, but I now have a very high quality color laser printer at home and I very much want to use it for Tolkien related stuff.

Matthew's stickers are a treasure trove! Are there any other that you (and I mean you!) could link me to? I am most interested in Rohan and Mirkwood and Lorien just now (for reasons I dont understand) and I'm going to make some smaller troops. Also orcs of all types are on my mind right now. I'm sure the great Dwarves Mine set is playing a role in my new-found vigor.

Richard

"The New Shadow", page 209 of The Peoples of Middle-Earth (History of Middle-Earth part XII)

Finding an easy link to read up on it on the Net might be trickier though.. On the other hand, if you are an "up-to-speed" Tolkien fan I think you will enjoy the HoME books so if you don't have them I suggest you get them ;)

Thanks for that. I haven't gotten much past "The Lays of Beleriand." I will tackle the rest of the 12 (12 right?) volume history someday. So I'm not as "up to speed" as I appearantly liked to believe I was! Harumph!

I may have to finally try my hand at sticker designing.

BTW, does anyone know what Matt is up to now?

Red Bean has done some Lotr decal's in the past, Here . Since they changed to a new website it portal's there after a few seconds so If you want some of those decals you have to save it, then press the back button till you get all the ones you want.
