September Monthly Challenge: New CC Mascot

Post by JoshWedin »

Hey All,

This month's challenge will be a little different. As you may be aware, some people have been discussing the possibility of creating a new mascot for Classic Castle. Our first mascot was Henry. Our second was Harold. As Harold is nearing the end of his travels, it is time to create a new mascot. The purpose of this mascot is two-fold. First, I will be building the "official" version and he will go on a world tour, much the same as the previous mascots. Secondly, anyone can build their own copy, to place in their MOCs and such, as a sort of Classic Castle signature.

Unlike previous challenges, there will be a prize of sorts and more rigid guidelines.

1. The Admins have already named the unbuilt mascot. His name will be Hugh.

2. Hugh should be generic enough that many different people will be able to build him. Think of Henry, rather than Harold in this regard. While rare parts are awesome and fun, they should be avoided in building Hugh. Hugh should have a classic smiley face or a very generic face, but the smiley is prefered.

3. Any combinations of pieces are allowed but remember that Hugh is representing Classic Castle. He is not a Space Knight. ;)

4. Try to avoid having Hugh belong to any one faction. If you have to have him belong to a faction, it should be the one represented by the shields on the CC banner.

This challenge will be open to entries, in this thread, for two weeks. Sometime after Sept 16th, the Admins will choose a list of their favorites and open voting. After that vote, Hugh will be official. I will build him and hopefully bring him to BrickCon. After Harold's travels are over, Hugh will begin his tour.

The winning designer will receive a custom forum title of their choice (within the Terms Of Service, of course ;) )

Build On!
Josh

Woohooo!! Sounds awesome. I'll definitely be submitting an entry after I get back from my trip to Alaska! Good luck everyone!

PS, I thought of a caption for future photos featuring the new mascot. It is: "Who goes there? Hugh goes there!"

I'm glad to see that the ball is rolling on this one.

I have a fairly simple submission that I'll put forward.

I'm in something of an awkward position as I had a design in mind before I proposed the idea of a CC mascot, however I liked some of the suggestions made by Forestboy in the original mascot thread. As such, if I were to include my modified (and personally preferred) design I feel that credit should go to him for the design. The designs are fundamentally the same, save for the colouring of his left limbs. Still, I feel that this is a significant change that makes this figure more distinct so I'm a bit torn on my submission.

My original design (formerly Henry) can be seen here.

Image

He's exceedingly basic with a few nods to more classic figures. While the torso is modern, it is also quite generic and lends itself well to blending into most scenes. Dark pearl grey armour struck me as being an obvious choice as it resembles the classic dark grey armour of the 80s with a modern touch.

When Forestboy suggested having a two-toned figure I liked the idea as it helped differentiate the figure from the various castle factions further. I modified built a version of my original design based on his idea and found that the figure looked more striking. He simply stands out more. The modified design based on Forestboy's suggestion can be seen here.

Image

The basic concept is the same. Hugh is a generic figure as it makes him easy to build and easy to identify. The basic design is essentially a lion knight mail torso (no faction logo) with a dark pearl grey helmet and spear. The first design included red arms and red legs. The updated design incorporated blue on the left side and a black set of hips. One of the key concepts with this design is that Hugh can change roles by interchanging a few accessories. While his torso legs and arms are untouchable, with different accessories and headgear Hugh can go from being a generic soldier, to being a peasant or a sojourner.

Image

Image

I prefer the Forestboy variation because the figure seems to remain relatively distinct irrespective of what accessories you give him. He can easily fit into a wide range of roles while standing out in a crowd. I'll probably wait and let Forestboy give his input before I submit, but for now my design is all red.

The Gallery is here (obviously the shield would need to be replaced with the one in the CC logo)

You not may have noticed, but my figure has decals. I did not want to do it, but I do not have these parts. I wanted to use the classic castle banner's shield design but I could not do it with the parts I have.

first let me apologies in advance for the bad pics(no mater how hard I try I can't get my darn camera to work right)
anyway, Here's my entry
Image
I call him Hugh the wandering knight.
he has all three colors in the classic-castle shield and I think all his parts should be generic enough for most every body to build him.the only indication of a faction he has is the crown on his belt buckle
here are some possible accessories for him
Image
EDIT:
I took a better picture of him, here's a link

My entry, a collaboration of different factions, using at least one part from a good portion of historic Lago Castle factions. Hugh, with the Dragon Master's helmet, and his faithful squire, Henry Junior ( :D ). Enjoy at your liesure and/or discretion.

:roflol: I actually forgot to post the link the first time.

If I were to make something out of LEGOs, I would probably use LEGOs. Pretty advanced stuff going on up in my head.

..I think that after two boys it is time for a girl mascot, but calling her "Hugh" would be a little strange ;)

My version of Hugh is similar to the traveling Hughes above. I definitely picture him as traveling from MOC to moc making 'Where's Waldo' Appearances. Given this, I gave him bright bright blue to make him stand out just a little, and an overcoat to make him unique. I think half of the fun is to make it so he isn't completely obvious yet very recognizable with a trademark outfit everyone can make. So regardless hope you find the overcoat helpful! And if your into space or other eras, this works wonderful as a black trench coat as well. Throw in a Graduation gown for full effect... :)

^^Sean, well done mate! I really like the cloak folding technique.

I now submit my own contender for the mascot title. I tried to make "Hugh" with some more popular parts, namely head, helmet, sword, and shield. Also in the true spirit of Classicness, everything is old grey, and I even used a head with a solid stud. :)

Here's my idea for Hugh. While I only had silver pieces for the armor and the helmet, I think old grey would make it a little more classic.

That's the best one so far, IMHO. :D

While Hugh looks great in that outfit, I respectfully disagree that it fits the criteria. The torso is not common enough for all to be able to locate one.

Let's wait to voice our opinions until the voting actually starts, shall we? ;)

PS - Don't close the entry period until I get a chance to make one! I just got home from AK last night and will plan on coming up with one after work this evening!

here's my submission.. when the King so declared "Hugh! Step Forward!" 3 Hugh's stepped forward ;)

Image

Hugh is represented by red arms with a shiny chain-mail torso & blue pants, a classic smiley face. The shiny helmet makes him more recognizable and safer when traveling in the dark.

Cheers!
